Facilitates a safe and welcoming Library facility by providing visible safety and security services for the Library employees and patrons.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Circulate public service areas inside the Library and around the building; support staff in monitoring areas to maintain safety and security throughout the Library.
  • Report hazardous conditions to Library management.
  • Engage patrons and solicit cooperation in understanding and complying with Library policy.
  • Advise patrons of inappropriate behavior that may result in further action, including possible suspension of library privileges; counsel patrons to avoid further action. Escalate response as appropriate.
  • Escort disruptive patrons from the Library premises; contact police when necessary.
  • Refer customers to other library staff and sources of information in response to customer service requests.
  • Respond to safety incidents, alarms, and accidents; contact emergency services as necessary.
  • Assist patrons with lost personal items, illnesses, or emergency situations.
  • Investigate disturbances in the Library; maintain order and safety.
  • Work with other members of the Library Safety Team to identify, communicate, and share best safety practices throughout the Library.
  • Assist with the development of safety, security, and emergency policies and procedures.
  • Assist in training and onboarding staff regarding safety and security in the Library, including conducting drills and coordinating with external partners to provide training
  • Document incidents in a timely way; sharing incident information as well as recommendations for future action, if appropriate, with supervisors and colleagues
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, training, and Experience Guidelines

High School diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of experience in a field related to the job.

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
  • City and Library practice, policies, and procedures.
  • Principles of public library service
  • Basic understanding of common health disorders that may affect behaviors; ability to recognize and respond appropriately to aberrant behavior patterns.

Skills in:

  • Working independently with limited supervision; exercising initiative and good judgment in the performance of duties
  • Developing and sustaining effective relationships with colleagues, patrons, and community partners from a diverse range of backgrounds, ages, and experiences.
  • Handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Resolving patron complaints and concerns.
  • Reading reports and memoranda.
  • Completing forms; taking messages.
  • Using the computer and various software programs.

Key competencies:

  • Demonstrating empathy, courtesy, and compassion while fairly and consistently enforcing policies.
  • Responding in a calm and composed way to tense situations.
  • Balancing safety and security with library principles regarding access, privacy, inclusion, and friendly service.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Class "C" Texas driver's license.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid and Mental Health First Aid within six (6) months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Standing, Walking, Sitting, Fine Dexterity, Bending, Crouching, Vision, Hearing, Talking, Use of foot controls.

Hiring Range: $17.49 - $21.91, hourly.
