How you'll contribute:

The Director of Assessment provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the hospital's assessment, referral, and intake functions, ensuring timely, high-quality clinical evaluations and exceptional customer service for individuals seeking treatment for substance use, dual diagnosis, psychiatric, or emotional disorders. This role combines strong clinical expertise with business acumen, performance management, and team leadership, driving the department to achieve key performance indicators (KPIs) and contribute to overall hospital growth and operational success.

The Director oversees all walk-in and phone-based assessments, supervises inquiry management, ensures accurate documentation, and maintains efficient scheduling of assessment operations. The Director partners closely with physicians, nursing, business development, utilization review, and administration to ensure appropriate level-of-care decisions, strong conversion rates, and a seamless admission experience. This leader sets high expectations for staff performance, provides ongoing coaching and development, and actively monitors productivity, service quality, and operational outcomes.

Key Responsibilities Strategic & Business Leadership

  • Establishes, tracks, and reports on departmental KPIs including inquiry-to-admission conversion, response times, assessment accuracy, customer experience, team productivity, and compliance metrics.
  • Uses data trends and business intelligence to drive decision-making, improve processes, and achieve annual departmental goals.
  • Collaborates with hospital leadership to align departmental operations with organizational strategy, census goals, and financial targets.
  • Ensures operational efficiency by optimizing staffing, workflow, scheduling, and resource allocation.

Clinical & Operational Excellence

  • Directs and performs the screening of potential patients and initiates the integrated assessment process.
  • Ensures all assessments meet clinical standards and regulatory expectations, and that recommendations use the least restrictive and clinically appropriate level of care.
  • Serves as liaison between physicians, families, referral sources, and internal departments to support safe and timely admissions.
  • Ensures accurate and complete transmission of clinical information to providers for appropriate treatment planning.
  • Conducts daily census reviews and prepares morning reports with current referral activity, pending admissions, and trends.

People Leadership & Team Development

  • Leads, mentors, and holds the team accountable for performance, service quality, and behaviors aligned with organizational values.
  • Provides ongoing coaching to strengthen assessment skills, customer service, communication, and workflow efficiency.
  • Uses performance metrics to guide feedback, annual reviews, and developmental planning.
  • Fosters a culture of ownership, engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Customer & Referral Experience

  • Ensures all inquiry calls are handled professionally, efficiently, and in alignment with established KPIs.
  • Maintains strong relationships with referral sources, ensuring timely communication and high satisfaction.
  • Supports business development efforts by ensuring consistent high-quality interactions, rapid response processes, and dependable service standards.

Compliance & Regulatory Readiness

  • Maintains expert knowledge of CMS, Joint Commission, EMTALA, and state regulations.
  • Conducts routine process audits and leads corrective action planning to ensure continuous regulatory readiness.
  • Ensures accuracy, privacy, and compliance with all HIPAA guidelines and documentation standards.

Qualifications

Education:
Master's degree in social work, counseling, or related field required, or appropriate licensure per state guidelines. RN licensure may substitute where allowed.

Experience:
Prior leadership experience in a psychiatric or behavioral health setting, with direct involvement in assessments for substance use, dual diagnosis, and psychiatric populations. Must demonstrate strong clinical assessment ability and proven success in meeting departmental goals, managing KPIs, and leading teams.

License:
Current, unencumbered clinical license (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, RN, or equivalent per state requirements). Must hold a valid driver's license and maintain insurability.

Additional Requirements:
CPR and Handle with Care training within 30 days of hire.
