Position Overview:
Southwestern University has an immediate opening for an Assistant Director of Annual Giving. As a member of the University Relations Annual Giving team, this position focuses on expanding its fundraising program by effectively using social media, crowdfunding, and volunteer engagement. This position also manages special projects such as the faculty/staff annual campaign. This position carries a portfolio of alumni to visit and engage in fundraising, driving alumni participation. This is a full-time exempt position eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
Essential Duties:
- Design and implement a comprehensive plan to engage class, reunion, and affinity group volunteers in Annual Giving efforts, including volunteer recruitment, onboarding, management, and stewardship.
- Maintain a regular schedule of personalized volunteer engagement, including phone, mail, email, and social media communications, as well as face-to-face meetings and events on-and off-campus.
- Manage the online Volunteer Management System to provide volunteers with the tools to perform successful outreach activities
- Responsible for meeting quantifiable goals in building and cultivating a pipeline of alumni donors and prospects at the $500-$1,000 giving level and growing alumni participation through the class agent and affinity group programs.
- Work with Director of Annual Giving to coordinate, manage, and implement strategies for the direct mail, email, social media, crowdfunding, on-line giving challenges, and other Annual Giving tactics.
- Work with the Annual Giving team to coordinate and manage the annual faculty/staff giving
- Directs the strategic initiatives and provide the coordination necessary to include special micro-giving projects in the Annual Giving plan.
- Works with Director of Annual Giving, provide leadership, direction, and strategy for the Brown Society (consecutive giving society).
- Work with the Director of Annual Giving, Director of Stewardship, and staff to develop, expand, and refine all facets of the Annual Giving and stewardship initiatives.
- Participate in regular University Relations Annual Giving office staff meetings and University special events.
- Work with all University Relations staff to ensure consistent messaging to constituents.
- Support Southwestern’s comprehensive campaign.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- One to three years of development work experience in annual giving fundraising or equivalent experience.
- Strong leadership and time management skills with the ability to effectively and simultaneously manage many diverse relationships.
- The ability to control and move forward on several priorities simultaneously, without losing focus on the objectives of the University. This includes switching priorities as required, without losing momentum.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Strategic thinking coupled with a solid understanding of what constitutes well-written development documents essential.
- Ability to function as a catalyst, guide, and doer. This individual must engage volunteers, donors and prospective donors utilizing a collaborative and facilitative approach.
- Must possess a high level of self-confidence, professionalism, and the ability to perform under pressure.
- Integrity and the ability to build trust through one’s own commitment to high personal and professional standards.
- Evening and weekend work during special events on and off campus required.
- Resilience and a good sense of humor are essential.

- Ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Three or more years of experience in development or other fundraising capacity.
- Knowledge of Southwestern University, its culture and its constituencies.
