Position Overview:

Southwestern University has an immediate opening for an Admission Counselor. Reporting to the Director of Admission. This position involves both direct and indirect recruitment of prospective students for Southwestern University and helps families navigate the college admission process. The position is strongly focused on providing excellent follow-through, customer service and communicating the educational opportunities available at Southwestern University. The Admission Counselor will primarily travel within Texas and several areas throughout the nation to recruit prospective students and is responsible for meeting individual recruitment goals and contributing to the overall success of the Enrollment Services Division. This is a full-time non-exempt position eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.

Essential Duties:

  • Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate all phases of recruitment within an assigned geographic area including:
    • Visiting high schools
    • Attending college fair programs
    • Planning receptions and promotional programs
      • This approximately 8-10 weeks of job function.
    • Conduct in-person and virtual information sessions and engage with prospective families who visit campus.
    • Conduct in-person and virtual scholarship and admission interviews with prospective students.
    • Read and evaluate applications and provide input in the student candidate selection process.
    • Articulate the university message and strengthen Southwestern’s brand to prospective students, families, high school counselors, alumni and community members.
    • Nurture, build, and sustain ongoing professional relationships with prospective students, their families, high school and independent counselors, community partners and alumni to achieve assigned enrollment management objectives.

Additional Duties

  • Complete appropriate department paperwork, including travel expense reports, interview reports, etc.
  • Address telephone, electronic and written inquiries regarding the admission status of prospective students.
  • Interact with Southwestern University administrators, faculty, staff students and alumni at both on and off campus events.
  • Continuously stay up to date on University updates and topics related to higher education.
  • Assume additional projects and responsibilities as required by the Director of Admission and the Enrollment Services Leadership Team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably from a Liberal Arts institution.
  • Ability to lift boxes of at least 25 lbs.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Understanding of and commitment to a liberal arts education.
  • Availability and willingness to consistently attend work and maintain a regular work schedule. Also, enthusiastically and frequently work evenings, and partial weekends, as needed for success. Weekend work typically 15+ events a year and evenings will vary per person.
    • There are certain months of the year where these will be heavier than others, mainly in the fall and spring seasons.
  • Possess a proactive approach when following up with students with students and families through what can be a complex and competitive admission process with a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage time, activity and spending while staying focused on accomplishments of objectives.
  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities and produce a reliable work product, even in stressful situations.
  • Possess outstanding presentation, communication and interaction skills (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated professional manner with all internal and external University constituencies including during high stress/complicated conversations.
  • Excellent organization, decision-making, and reading, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including the use of software in the Microsoft & Google Suites (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Docs, Sheets, Slides).
  • Willingness to adhere to the University’s core values.
  • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an admission setting as an undergraduate.
  • Proficiency or fluency in a second language, preferably Spanish.
  • Extensive knowledge of the University and the programs offered.

Starting annual salary: $20.35 hr. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting salary.
