Position Overview:

Southwestern University has an immediate opening for a Coordinator for Outdoor Adventure. This position will report to the Assistant Director for Outdoor Adventure. The Coordinator for Outdoor Adventure is responsible for assisting with the administration of an extensive outdoor adventure program and assists in the overall management of a comprehensive campus recreation program, which also includes intramural sports, sport clubs, fitness classes, and special events. This is a full-time exempt position eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.

Essential Duties:

  • Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the outdoor adventure program, which includes time in the field, while leading 10+ trips per year (including Fall/Spring Break trips).
  • Coordinate an equipment checkout service that serves campus community members and provides community members with information about trip planning and destinations.
  • Select, train, and supervise a student staff of 6-8 whose responsibilities include assisting with outdoor adventure trips, workshops/events, and coordinating an equipment checkout service.
  • Manage expenditures of budgets for programming, special events, and workshops, and coordinate the purchase of all necessary equipment to support these programs.
  • Evaluate and revise program offerings and complete trip reports and participation records.
  • Complete and maintain an updated equipment inventory including date of purchase, cost, vendor, location, amounts, repair, maintenance, etc.
  • Manage and continually update the departmental website relating to Outdoor Adventure to conduct trip registration and allow participants to reserve outdoor equipment for checkout.
  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy in conjunction with full-time and student staff.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating a week-long training session for student staff each August.
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures for emergency action plans.
  • Assist in departmental First Aid/CPR/AED training sessions.
  • Leading a Pre-Orientation Program (Pirate Adventures) prior to SU’s Welcome Week each August
  • Identify risk management issues within the programs in order to suggest improvements as needed.
  • Evaluate all procedures annually to ensure the safety of participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Education, Recreation, Sports Management, or related field.
  • Minimum two years working experience in university recreation, outdoor recreation activities, and outdoor trip leadership/supervision.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogen certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in recreation, sports management, higher education, or related field.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Experience supervising, training, and evaluating student staff.
  • Experience with current industry standards and risk management standards for outdoor activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/understanding of safety and risk issues.
  • Ability to use computers for word processing, spreadsheets, and website development.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including a strong work ethic.
  • Current member of industry associations (AORE, NIRSA, etc.).
  • Possess a Current Wilderness First Responder certification or be willing and able to obtain this certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFA-Instructor) certification from a reputable provider.
  • Industry certifications in rock climbing, paddling, and/or outdoor ethics (CWI, SPI, ACA kayak instructor and/or swift water rescue, LNT Educator, etc.).
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certified.
  • Proven ability to perform well in stressful situations.
  • Possess excellent interaction and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Willingness to adhere to the University’s core values.
  • Demonstrate a professional manner with all internal and external University constituencies.
  • Ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation.
  • Understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including relating to liberal arts faculty.
  • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.

Starting annual salary: $42,494. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting salary.
