Position Overview:
Southwestern University has an immediate opening for a Seasonal Admission Reader (Part-Time, Temporary). This position will report to the Assistant Vice President of Admission. The Seasonal Admission Reader conducts holistic evaluations of first-year undergraduate applications, reviewing academic records, essays, recommendations, and other materials. Serving as the initial reader, they provide detailed and objective assessments within the context of a selective admissions process. The reader participates in remote training and maintains regular communication with the admissions team to ensure consistent, fair, and thorough application reviews. This is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt, remote position for an applicant who resides within the state of Texas that will work up to 30 hours per week.
As all applications are read online, the incumbent must have a reliable computer that can access reading systems and online-meeting systems with access to reliable high-speed internet connection.
Essential Duties:
- Holistically review first-year undergraduate applications, including transcripts, personal essays, recommendation letters, and other application materials.
- Evaluate each applicant’s academic, personal, and extracurricular credentials within the context of a selective admissions process.
- Serve as the initial reader for assigned applications, providing detailed, objective, and well-documented evaluative notes.
- Participate in remote training sessions led by the Assistant Vice President of Admission to ensure consistent and fair evaluation practices.
- Complete scholarship review process while reviewing candidate for admission.
Additional Duties:
- Maintain regular communication with the admissions team, attend weekly check-ins, and incorporate feedback to enhance review quality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Well-developed computer skills and the ability to adapt to new technology are critical
- Strong time management skills
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to exercise sound judgment
- Possess keen analytical skills and concise writing ability
- Willingness to accept feedback and quickly adapt to suggested modifications
- Ability to maintain the strictest levels of discretion and confidentiality
- Ability to read for long periods of time from a computer screen
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in selective college admission
Eligibility Restrictions:
To avoid conflicts of interest, candidates currently working directly with high school students in the following roles will not be considered:
- High school college counselors
- Independent educational consultants
- College admission professionals actively employed elsewhere
Starting hourly rate: $20.00 hr. The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting hourly rate.
