The Mathematics faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Southwestern University invites applications for a part-time Instructor/Assistant Professor position in Mathematics for Spring 2027 to teach two sections of Modern Calculus I.

As a foundational course for many majors, this course places a greater emphasis on basic modeling, multivariate topics, and consistent use of mathematical software (e.g. R/Sage) than may be found in other calculus courses. Course materials (e.g., topic notes/worksheets) were collaboratively developed within the department and will be shared. The courses will be taught in person at our Georgetown campus, meeting for a 75-minute class session on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. and at 11:00 a.m. There may be some flexibility with these times. There is also the expectation of some in-person office hours as well. The description of the course follows:

MODERN CALCULUS I. This course focuses on introducing calculus with a modeling first approach. Topics include: functions as models of data, vectors, differential calculus of functions of one and several variables, optimization, and integration. Applications may be drawn from varied areas, such as biology, chemistry, economics, and physics. Attention is given to both symbolic and numeric computing. This course expects students to have prior exposure to: trigonometry, exponents, logarithms, functions and their graphs.

This position is not eligible for employer immigration sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without requiring employer-sponsored work authorization.
